Angle grinders are three things: A way to really quickly embed little abrasive rocks into your face, a fast and powerful motor, a high-speed right angle gear drive, and a doubly-supported output spindle that usually even comes with a little nut to attach deadly centrifugal grenades to. In the past, I’ve personally seen them used on some Battlebots in a weapon application for overhead bar spinners in the “sublight” weight classes (12 and 30 pounds).

All angle grinders I've opened have the grease flung outside of the pinion and the pinions are bone dry. Be it cheap grinders from harbor freight or fancy brands, even when new, the factory grease is everywhere except on the pinions,.Just today I opened up a fancy Makita brushless grinder gearbox that was noisy to find pristine-looking grease everywhere but on the pinions.Using a screwdriver tip I relocated some of the grease on the gears, closed the gear box, fired it up and it got much quieter for a few seconds.

Well until all that grease was flung on the inside surface of the gearbox again, away from the pinions.Lo and behold I go on youtube, looking for an answer and (not suprinsingly) find countless observations of the same effect be it DeWalt, Milwaukee or any other brand; alas no explanation either aside from the identical conclusion: 'it just doesn't make sense'.So tell me, tool-wizes of reddit, what is the reasoning behind designing a gearbox that flings grease away from the gears, never to be seen again?I originally posted this to but no one seems to know.
